- Okay, step number five is build a team. Okay and so once you're moving forward with your business idea, and you're ready to do it, you're gonna be owning a lot of the responsibilities, but chances are, you might need somebody to help you launch the product, launch the business. So I'm gonna read this quote from Jack Welch. He says, "If you pick the right people, "and give them the opportunity to spread their wings, "and put compensation as a carrier behind it, "you almost don't have to manage them." And so finding the right people, building the team is so important, getting the right people on the bus, okay? So first you wanna get the right people on the bus, then you wanna get the right people in the right seats on the bus, okay? So Clay, go ahead and break this down, and why building a team is such a vital step here for moving forward with the business. - This is a drawing I've been working on for about seven seconds, and I want to share it with you here, but here you go. David Robinson is perhaps, he is one of the top 50 players of all time, wore the jersey number 50, a guy who I have a lot of respect for. Every time I've interacted with him, he's so much better than I thought he was, every time. It's just he beats himself, but every time I meet him, I'm going this guy beat himself for his own higher standard. I mean he just raises the bar every year, great father, great business guy. Then off the court, he retires after being one of the most successful NBA players on the court, he starts to think oh, the Admiral Fund, and if you Google it, he goes on with the Admiral Fund to open a series of charter schools called Carver Academy after George Washington Carver that have just dominated, they've done so well. The kids are doing well. Then he starts this Admiral Fund for real estate. They start buying real estate. They start investing in companies like Centerplace, and sporting stores, and he's making money hand over fist in an ethical way. He's super smart, and then there's this guy Dr. Zellner. He's the top optometrist in Oklahoma. He's the top, he has the fastest growing auto auction. He helped to start a bank. He's on the board of directors. He and his brother, they have a, his brother owns a chiropractic center. He's an investor in multiple companies. I mean I can go on and on about, he has one of the top horse racing businesses in town. I mean it's just what? I mean every industry the guy's got the Midas touch, and then you have Lee Cockerell. Lee used to manage Walt Disney World. He managed 40,000 people, 40,000 people, 40,000 people. So when I do a speaking event, people look at me, and they go, yeah, you're kind of a man bear pig here you know. You're kind of a man bear pig, and you're kinda, you know, you're just kind of a man bear pig, you know what I mean? And you're going, well you're kind of a weird individual here, but if you're hanging out with these guys, you're probably all right. Even though you're a man bear pig right here, those guys are all right, so if you're hanging out with them, your idea might make sense because David makes sense, because Z makes sense, because Lee makes sense, I make sense. That's how it works. Now I've had a lot of success as an entrepreneur before this, but I've never been in the NBA Hall of Fame, never will be. I'm not a doctor. I don't have a degree in optometry. I don't have a degree in mathematics like him. I've never ran Walt Disney World, but I've had a lot of success, so in order to get that sort of validation on a world wide stage, I had to, I mean I received a lot of awards and stuff, but they were for small business, so I had to team up with a team that would make my ideas seem more valid, and you do, too, which is why you need endorsements for your book. So you're just gonna need a couple of them, and then once you get a couple key endorsements, it'll change the game for ya. It's worth every penny. I'd go get 'em. - So specifically for Thrivers, and you want a great team. For authors, you're gonna wanna build a team of endorsements, and so we talked about that on one of the previous trainings. - [Clay] Or co-authors - Or co-authors, or other people that are going to enhance your value, maybe they compliment, do something that you don't do. There's a guy I know, he's a doctor, and I won't divulge his name here, but very secret, very secret, he wrote a book that was awesome, didn't sell anything. He sold the book to the such and such for Dummies, the yellow books, you know the such and such for Dummies? He's made millions, same book, true story, know the guy. So it's a deal where like he literally wrote a book, and then he teamed up with the Dummies people, and they have a vehicle for marketing. Same thing like Chicken Soup for the Soul, Jack Canfield, he's sold like the most books of any author of all time, ever, ever, and he's teaming up with people who have a great story to tell, and then it's like Chicken Soup for Entrepreneurs, Chicken Soup for Moms, Chicken Soup for Bikers, or you know whatever, that's how it works there. So you just got to do that. Now also I wanna redo this notable quotable, and then we'll peace out on this particular move here. "If you pick the right people and give them "the opportunity to spread their wings, "and put compensation as a barrier behind it, "you almost don't have to manage them", Jack Welch. What he's saying is if you go out there and build an all star team, David Robinson doesn't lose, Z doesn't lose, Lee Cockerell doesn't lose. Those guys know how to win, you know? You just wanna build a great team. That's how you do it.
