  • 25 Variables to Google and User Compliance: 2. A clear theme
  • Lesson Nugget: Google checks for synonyms.
  • Lesson Nugget: You must keep your website focused on the main topic.
  • Lesson Nugget: You must focus on adding value to your users.
  • Fun Factoid: Google announced that for the first time, it was seeing more search activity on mobile than desktop. The caveat was that this was for 10 countries, including the US. Google now processes over 40,000 search queries every second on average (visualize them here), which translates to over 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.

  • Lesson Nugget: Use Wordpress websites templates

- Okay, variable number two: You must have a clear theme. A clear theme is contributing to a Google and user compliant website. Clay, why is it important to have a clear theme for your website? - Well, Google checks for synonyms. So, let's go ahead and do a Google search real quick to make this relevant. And let's Google, Tulsa men's haircuts. That's our, you know, business. You Google Tulsa men's haircuts, you'll find the Elephant in the Room. And, the Elephant in the Room, if it's a haircut business, it's a men's grooming business, what kind of topics would you expect to find on there? I mean, Marshall, what kind of topics would you expect to find on a men's grooming website? - Uh, different products that can make my hair, and maybe my facial shaving, look better. - So, is paraffin hand dip something you'd find on there? - [Marshall] Yeah, potentially. Beard trimming. - Beard trimming, beard oil. - Beard oil. -I just go into the cheapest place, go in there, boom, they chop it. But, let's click on Elephant in the Room. Let's dive in here. If you're somebody who wants more than just a crappy mccraps cut and experience, this is the kind of place you go to. Click on services there in the front. There's a bunch of services you know, and they offer a whole bunch of options here. They're all up here, they're all different options they offer. They have scalp massage, razor service, face scrub, extended shampoo, precision shave, beard trim. I mean, this sounds like a lot of stuff that I've never had happen to me before. I mean, pretty much I've just been like, I would still do the bowl cut right now if all five of my kids hadn't broken all of our bowls. Marshall, you justman, puttin' it on there and you just give me that, that's awesome man, you know. But, with all my five kids, we've broken all the bowls, so we're basically just eatin' with our hands, like we're little raccoons or somethin', so. The thing is is that you have to have content related to your product on the side. It just won't come up top in Google if your site is devoted to men's haircuts, but then you're spending the majority of your website talking about spatulas. It just doesn't relate. It's gotta have a clear theme. Super, super important. Next thing you wanna focus on okay, next point of that though, you must focus on adding value to users. If you write a buncha content that comes up top in Google, and at no point does any of it make a point. Now real quick, some sites, people are lookin' for what? What's the point? Just to find your phone number and to call you, that's the point. They wanna find your service, give you a call, boom. So, let's go ahead and make this mobile comply. Just gonna scroll it in more narrow. Let's make it more mobile. Mobile. Keep goin'. So, if you're tryin' to get a hold of someone, if you're Googling Tulsa men's haircuts, what would you wanna do Stewart? If you found the website, what would you wanna do? - I wanna find out about rates, maybe, how much a haircut is, hours of operation. - I'm just bein' real - I just wanna book a haircut, maybe, you know. - [Stewart] Yeah. So, there's a little phone icon, I'd probably click that. Probably just And, by the way, we're gonna put the percentage of users now, that are using Google on their mobile devices, it is staggering. So, every site, including this one, that we work on, we're constantly updating to be more mobile compliant. - [Stewart] Yup. - But if you look up in the top right, and you click that little phone icon there right, boom. Right there, that's how you schedule an appointment, that's the phone number to call. That's the deal. We're making it more and more obvious all the time. But, the users, they have to find value. They're trying to schedule a haircut. But, if your site is devoted to offering parenting tips, and your site's just pure dribble, people aren't gonna stick on there very long. Okay, so you've gotta have that real value. The third is you have to use WordPress templates. WordPress templates. Stewart, why would you wanna use a WordPress template, and not try to create your own brand spankin' new website, from the ground up, PHP, coded, got my, I went to code academy, and I learned to code, and I'm justcoding. Why would I not just wanna code my brand new, spankin' site, original code from the bottom up? - Well, tools like WordPress were developed to make it easy for small business owners to create their own website. And themes, when you talk about a theme, like a WordPress theme, it allows you to download it for free, or even for low cost, like 49 bucks. And, you don't have to pay thousands of dollars to a web designer. If you're entrepreneurial, and you wanna do it yourself, and learn, and get into the nuts and bolts of it, you can. - There are people that I know, who are watching this right now, and you're going, "If I can't make the site myself, "if I can't make the chair that I sit on myself, "by chopping down my own tree "and making it of my own wood, "using my own bare hands. "I'm talking about the hands of a bear. "I don't wanna sit in it", you're probably gonna lose in Google, it's true.

- Wordpress just makes it easy, so you've got a, so Stuart do you have some Wordpress themes that you want to hard on at all? Or any ones that you kind of encourage homies to check out? - Sure, one that we've used is by a company called Elegant Themes. It's called Divi. D-I-V-I. You can go to elegantthemes.com and buy this particular theme. - [Clay] What does this cost, bro? - Most themes are gonna run maybe between free and $49. This particular company you sign up for a membership. So you pay annually for that theme, but it's a really good theme. It gives you a lot of options, a lot of control. - [Clay] Forty bucks a year? - Something like that, yeah. - Sick, that's awesome. So Thrivers, this is the kind of knowledge you might get in college, but we're just trying to help you. We're just trying to bridge that gap. I mean, maybe you got that great knowledge in college, but you need some practical-- this is where you get it. Stuart, are there any other sites you'd recommend to get some good themes, or is this kind of like the spot you recommend once people start at? - You know, another big one is called Theme Forest. - [Clay] Theme Forest. - Theme Forest, if you Google "theme forest" you're gonna find-- - [Clay] Can we google that real quick while we're talking about that? I just want to make sure the Thrivers were getting that really specific, practical, actionable, get-it-done, boom. - [Stuart] Absolutely, so, here we are on themeforest.net. And I'm looking, it's kind of small, right here, but it's Wordpress, and you look at all these categories here. - [Clay] Oh, so good. - [Stuart] So let's say I'm in the wedding business, Clay. - [Clay] No way. - [Stuart] And I want to click on that, and these are themes that are designed specifically for weddings. You can see on the price on the right 59, 49, 44. And last I checked, 44 is less than several thousand. So if you really want to dig in this and do it yourself, you can. So I can buy a template like this. - If I buy this thing, how do I know that its gonna follow all of the Google rules? - Well, that's why you need to be on Thrive, Clay. We've got this checklist we're gonna make for you. Some things will automatically work out of the box. You install the theme and it will have permalinks. We'll discuss some of the title tags, and this and that. But, what we're gonna do, Clay, is go through the plug-ins that you need, that work directly in Wordpress and we'll show you how to use that stuff. - Dude, this is blowing my mind, I'm just gonna duct tape it and just put it back in there. Okay, so, moving on here. Next thing here, is you gotta understand search engine is a marathon. It is not a sprint.

- So I'm gonna show you something I'm working on right now. I call this the Holy Grail. What is the Jay Z song? - I think it's called, - [Marshall] "Magna Carta Holy Grail". - "Til the cup runneth over, Holy Grail", you know what I mean? Maybe we should read those lyrics at some point, maybe we shouldn't, I don't know. We need to get ready. Just get ready to get ready, okay, but anyway, go ahead and Google Tulsa PR Firms. I've been working on this guy here for like a decade. ♫ Scroll on down, scroll on down ♫ Look who's fourth, there I am ♫ Oh, now this is the bad news for the other guys. All right, if you scroll down to the bottom of makeyourlifeepic.com, so go to makeyourlifeepic.com, and then just scroll to the bottom of that piece. I hope it doesn't take a nuclear half-life to load because that's embarrassing. If you scroll down, you're gonna click on site map. Thrivers guess how many, Marshall take a guess at how many pages of content Claytron Enterprises has up here. Just keep scrollin'. - [Marshall] Oh man. - [Clay] ♫ Scrollin, scrollin, scrollin' ♫ on the Thrive episode ♫ Yeah yeah, 'cause I'm scrollin', scrollin', ♫ Scrollin', scrollin', I'm scrollin ♫ On the Thrive episode ♫ We're still going. Everybody now, ♫ We're scrollin ♫ Sing it with me now. ♫ We're scrollin', hah, hah ♫ We're scrollin', scrollin' on the Thrive episode ♫ Now if you click, keep going though. ♫ Scrollin', scrollin', scrollin', scrollin' ♫ Scrollin' on the ♫, I mean this is a lot of stuff right here, right? - [Marshall] Wow. - [Clay] Now if you click any of those; click any of those, just one of them. We have a blasty blast on that right there, buddy. Ah, there's my face. Scroll on down. All of that is content. Marshall, how many words of content do we have to have? - [Marshall] At least a thousand. - [Clay] A thousand words, so I've got, it's absurd, but I've got over a thousand words on almost a thousand pages. You heard, true story, real, real, real real stuff, yeah. - [Marshall] Wow. - [Clay] Yeah, run that back. It's unbelievable. - [Marshall] That's impressive. - [Clay] Yeah, flip it and reverse it, so I'm just saying it's gonna be really hard to beat me. No, no you won't be able to beat me very soon, so I'm very close to beating the competition. So how did I do it? Well, I have like a thousand pages, and I pay our team to write content and stuff, so that's probably an investment right there of $30,000. Now, if you're a Thriver, and you wanna beat somebody right now who's the top in the world, guess what, you can do it, but you gotta get into the action right now. You gotta get started as soon as possible, and understand this is a long so, wait a minute. What if you can't be top in Google right now, are you saying that I shouldn't do any online marketing? No, no, you should start online ads right now while beginning a search engine marketing plan because once you're top in Google, guess what happens? Your phone rings, all day, everyday. Everyday? Everyday. Okay, final thing here okay, final thing I want to show you here is that when you have a clear theme, it makes it where users can find what they're looking for and they're not thrown off. So I wanna give you an example of a clear theme. We have one client we work with, I'm very proud of their success and what they're doing. So Tulsa Jr. Oilers, so yeah, just check out these guys. These guys, they're the Oilers, the professional hockey team, okay? They're former pro hockey players. It's a minor league hockey team, and they now started a program called the Tulsa Jr. Oilers, and their whole website is about hockey, and hockey apparel, and hockey leagues, and signing up for hockey camps, and Hockey McHockeysin. So if you Google Tulsa youth sports, these guys are starting to come up top in Google for Tulsa youth sports, right? So if you're Googling Tulsa youth sports, you'll find the YMCA, you'll find the Tulsa sports from the City of Tulsa. Then you find, click it man, just click that. I mean, wouldn't you freak out if you found this hockey related site, and all of a sudden you see ads for spatulas? - [Marshall] Yeah, that's true. - I mean maybe you're goin', these look like some good spatulas, we should get these. I mean maybe, but usually you're probably just gonna be thrown off. So you wanna have content relates to what you do, and only that content that relates to what you do. Marshall, am I missing something here? - No, a clear theme. This is the second variable of the Google and user compliant websites, and this is why it's so important. Having a clear theme. - Have a clear theme, and then make America great again.
